Fire damages Myrtle Point implement house and stock
A Sunday night blaze in the P. W. Laird building caused about 3000 in damage to tools and stock owned by Floyd Reed. The building suffered 450 to 000 in damage. Firefighters, led by Gaither Harrison, contained the flames within ten minutes with help from citizens. Fire officials say spontaneous combustion from oily rags may have caused the fire, and policies cover the losses.

P W Laird held a $1500 policy with Liverpool London Globe for three buildings in the block. Monday morning C H Giles notified the company of the fire and by evening was told repairs will begin once the Continental company adjuster Pulford and Pierson arrives to settle stock risk.

George Pope born January 25 1825 in Logan County Ohio moved to Illinois as a boy and joined a California immigrant train arriving Sacramento September 18 1852. He married Sarah Whitcraft January 3 1864 near Vacaville California. In 1891 the family moved to Coos County Oregon where he died January 14 1916 aged 90 years 11 months 20 days. He and his wife shared 62 years of marriage and had 13 children eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:00 Saturday at home Elder Thos Barklow officiating with interment in Norway Cemetery.

He moved from Illinois to Oregon twice worked in sawmills and ran a restaurant and grocery business. Funeral at the Brethren Church Myrtle Point at 2 00 pm with Elders John Root and Thos Barklow officiating. University of Oregon bulletin describes 89 minerals found in Oregon with about 22 having current commercial value. A new mineral vivianite was identified in Multnomah County too late for inclusion.
