1907 Oregon homicides show light sentences and few convictions
The Oregonian summarizes 1907 homicide statistics revealing 56 violent deaths, with 2 second degree murders, 1 manslaughter conviction, 14 acquittals, 10 deaths by self-inflicted means, 11 suspects not yet apprehended, and 13 awaiting trial. Coos County faces one case, a drunken lobby killing involving William Wearn and John Kelly. The piece criticizes light punishments and notes varied county records, with remarks on local fruit growers, mail routes, and regional developments amid a broader discussion of public safety and governance.
