A wide set of brief items reports John Hays Hammond’s bail in Johannesburg, a 62 mph New York windstorm damage, and American arrests. Others note a Pequonnock bridge collapse with deaths, Formosa rebellions, a Oakland alameda rash of safecrackers, a German color photography advance, and a rash of murders and fires including Guayaquil and East Portland incidents.
A Siberian trader, agent for Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, says Nansen reached the North Pole and found land before returning. Reports from Paris and Christiana suggest sightings and miscommunications about the Fram voyage begun in 1898, with incomplete details and doubtful carrier pigeon message.
A boat with five corpses and six survivors drifted ashore at Dog Island after departing Key West. Gilbert Holmes, the strongest survivor, told of a wrecked smack voyage, days without food or water, and several men dying, with corpses left in the hull as the living endured extreme suffering. Some survivors appeared mentally shaken by the ordeal.
Washington Feb 18 The Senate discussed Quay’s tariff bill delay and amendments preserving seed purchases. Blanchard lauded the Monroe Doctrine and urged legislative endorsement while criticizing agriculture policy. In Oregon City William Galloway named receiver of public moneys. Washington Feb 14 Morrill seeks tariff action. quarantine changes and Alaska boundary survey approved. House actions on silver and currency debated with Dingley proposing an international monetary conference. The National Provisioner notes a new poultry export industry developing from New York to the islands.
