Steamer Alliance's Thanksgiving Coast Run Disaster
The Alliance on the Portland to Coos Bay route faced severe weather at the Coos Bay bar on Thanksgiving, tearing away rudder gear and breaking propeller blades. Passenger D F Pyott of Marshfield drowned after being swept overboard as the vessel limped up the coast with a jury rudder and a tow from the Tuatook. Breakwater also sustained heavy seas and some woodwork damage during its Columbia bar crossing, while the Lissie Prien narrowly avoided wreck on the Coquille north jetty amid a rock strike.
