Coos County Fair Offers $500 For Boys And Girls Projects

Coquille April 20 Prizes totaling 500 dollars will be offered at the Coos County School Industrial Fair in Myrtle Point next September for boys and girls ages 9 to 18. Winners earn a trip to the State Fair in Salem with all expenses paid, plus scholarships and cash prizes for girls. Contest aims to link rural schools with homes and teach practical skills in farming sewing cooking and crafts under Oregon Agricultural College supervision.

Arbor Day Program At Alder Crest School

Arbor Day exercises were held Friday afternoon at Alder Crest School Upper Catching Creek with a decorated room and Miss Nell Rae Gilfillen receiving compliments on school grounds improvements. The program included Victrola songs recitations and dialogues by students such as Harley Higgins May Johnson Merle West Elbert West Daisy Smith Kathleen Marsters and others. Attendees included numerous families and local residents. Lane economy program cuts off two county school supervisors.

Marshfield Again Targeted by Forged Check Gang

A gang of about six Austrians forged Houger and Houser checks to steal around a thousand dollars from Marshfield and North Bend merchants. Four men were captured the same night by Deputy Sheriff W. C. Laird and Sheriff Carter. two leaders escaped. Captured suspects identified as Sam Leger, Joe Davis, Joe Serich, and John Pronach. Two more members were captured later, one at Lakeside and another at Coquille. Authorities believe the group also worked in Chateau, Montana and Boise, Idaho, with Burns Detective Agency tracking leads.

McLaren Describes Rescue Work on Pacific Coast

Rev. W G McLaren chaplain of the Oregon State Penitentiary and head of the Pacific Coast Rescue and Protective Association spoke on Life's Shadows to 60 70 listeners at the M E church. He outlined the association's purpose and recounts of recent coast state progress including aid to women and girls and assistance to men including paroled and discharged prisoners.

Trusty Harry Kramer Missing From Coquille Jail Yard

Sheriff Alf Johnson reported Harry Kramer, a trusty, disappeared from the Coquille jail yard around noon after leaving Marshfield following a Front street saloon incident on October 23, 1914. He had been sentenced to six months to a year with about four months served and could have earned release earlier for good behavior.

Fire destroys homestead on Catching Creek

Last Saturday afternoon the residence of Mr and Mrs Allison Roberts on their Catching Creek homestead burned after sparks from a brush heap set the fire. Firefighters arrived too late to save the building but most household goods were saved.

Miss Anona Harrison married Archie B. Taylor last Saturday afternoon at the M E Parsonage Coquile Rev C H Bryan officiated with Miss Dora Harrison as bridesmaid and Grade Sumerlin as best man. The couple will reside on Fourth Street in the Dodge residence after a visit to the groom's father L W Taylor in North Bend. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs L Harrison of Myrtle Point and the groom has lived in Myrtle Point for four years.

Water System Installed by HDDLE Fork Farmers

Four Midle Fork ranchmen have joined to build a community water system in Myrtle Point near the Coquille River. The plant draws from a spring on razarloaf mountain and serves household use and stock, covering about a mile of pipe and costing around 800 dollars. Beneficiaries include Guerin Brous, T. M. Stover, Frazer Hoffman, and E. M. Hoffman with plans for a concrete reservoir and top-tier pressure improvements.

Logging town renamed Powers in honor of A H Powers

The logging town on the South Fork twenty five miles south of this place will be officially known as Powers replacing Wag ner. The change honors A H Powers and avoids name confusion with another Oregon town. Official plat filed at Coquille on Friday. Lots priced 360 to 800 dollars. Daily passenger train service planned with an anticipated first run Sunday May 2. Train No 1 to Powers daily via Marshfield return around noon No 2 to Mile Point as current schedule specifies.

Constable Arrests Harry Brewster in Marshfield Assault

Last Friday night at Marshfield Severtson was slugged and robbed by a trio of attackers. He was thrown into Coos Bay and clung to a piling for hours. Brewster is accused of striking him, with another assailant hitting him in the mouth. About $90 was said to be lost. Brewster was detained by Timekeeper Zimmerman and later arrested by Constable Brown, then taken to Coquille by Sheriff Johnson.

North Bend and Coquille win trophies in contests

Miss Hazel Neal and Chester Adams led local entrants in the county declamatory and oratorical contest. North Bend’s Anna Truman won first in declamation with Neal of Myrtle Point and Mary McDonald of Bandon tying for second. In oratorio, Morton Tyrrell of Coquille took first with Ledwig Stone of Marshfield second.
