Smith Powers Plans Abandoned Rail Route

Bay April 18 last night's Coast Times reports that Smith Powers Logging Co. has abandoned plans to build a Myrtle Point to Marshfield railroad. The firm renews a wheelage contract with Southern Pacific, using SP tracks Myrtle Point to Marshfield while SP handles all business on the Smith Powers road Myrtle Point to Powers. Directors F A Warner and John Gerrigue of C A Smith Co. have been visiting camps near Powers to inspect holdings.

Portland Man Seeks Vote On Tenure In Office Bill

Richard Montrague of Portland asks Secretary of State Olcott to approve a petition form to refer the Orton tenure in office bill to a public vote. The measure, endorsed by Portland teachers, would change how teachers are dismissed by requiring a commission appointed by the circuit court to hear cases rather than the school board.

Arrangements completed this week for Col. Jewel Post of the G A R to loan twenty five old government rifles to the local U S Rifle Association. The rifles have been in the Post's charge for many years and will be used for practice of the manual of arms.

Cougar killings cited by hunter near Johnson Creek

John C. Warner, in Powers District for homestead proof, reports four cougars killed in the Johnson creek area over the last weeks. He notes cougars have slain many valley deer this winter as deer emerge from snow, estimating twenty five to thirty car cases killed nearby.

Market report from Portland records cattle with 800 head traded. Prices rose 25 to 35 cents with steers mainly 9.00 to 10.15 and best hay fed at 9.90 to 10.00. hogs rose 25 to 35 cents with tops around 15.35. sheep saw prime lambs at 11.25 and some spring lambs at 15.00. Stock hogs ranged 12.25 to 12.35 and cows 6.00 to 8.75.

Five Coquille Valley youths enlist in Navy recruiting effort

Five young men from Coquille Valley left for the Portland Navy recruiting station after submitting enlistment applications. The group includes Bert Clinton, Fred Bellat, Lawrence Machado, Harry Steward, and Art Smith of Myrtle Point. A sendoff gathering with local officials and around 150 citizens followed a Saturday dance, with Rev. J. F. Vernon addressing the crowd. Machado Steward and Smith, both minors, required parental consent. Machado later failed the naval medical exam, with Sell also failing and returning home soon.

The Coos Bay Times reports the Coos County Epworth League convention ended in North Bend with strong attendance.
