High water broke a 25 foot levee at Shawneetown in the Ohio River flood. The disaster, described as hurricane like, swept the town. Official counts report 600 persons perished amid the devastation.
Cattle buyers like W. Matlock pressed in Foesil and Gilliam county offering 20 for yearling stock and 81.50 for one head, while Crook county yearling sales surged with up to 25,000 head changing hands. The Prineville Journal estimates about 2.60 per head after shearing as an era of high prices looms with Denver stock commentators predicting the peak next fall and a slow rebound for years. WM Butler, buying cattle for J. M. Boardman, moved through Grant county this spring.
A special dispatch reports April 6 coverage from Wasmixarox and Wasuminaton with cabinet approval for armed intervention in Cuba and a push toward war or hostilities. It notes a fleet deployment to Havana to evacuate officials and citizens and a Schley cruiser campaign toward the Canaries within 48 hours as a naval response.
