The 1917 department of labor review shows average family food bills rising from 339.30 to 425.54 since 1913, with wages falling behind. Potatoes, eggs, flour, and butter show sharp price jumps, while some items like sirloin stay cheaper. Declines in buying power are noted despite wage gains and shorter workdays.
In Myrtle Point local voters backed W Taylor Dement for mayor 182 to 69 over J B Whitaker. City Recorder E A Dodgeway was re elected with 3176 votes, J M Arrington re elected treasurer with 182 votes, and councilmen Chas Adams W C Cutler and F Le Landy received 142 139 and 85 votes respectively. An initiative to bar under 21 from pool halls and related venues passed 100 to 90, while Sunday closing of such venues failed 74 to 114.
Council met Monday and canvassed results, passing a regulation on the outcome. The sidewalk committee reported progress on most projects. a decision on the quota was deferred to the midmonth meeting for reconsideration.
Eugene Oregon March 30 The Southern Pacific company announced a half rate for passengers traveling from Eugene to resorts along the Coos Bay branch line.
Dr Hector Macpherson of the Royal Economics department and A C Pulford of Myrtle Point explain the timing and terms for state Rural Credits loans. Borrowers may secure blanks from county land board representatives and choose 10 20 30 or 36 year plans with 36 year payments of six dollars annually and a final ten dollar payment. Interest may be halted on partial prepayments.

Sen. La Follette argues against the ship arming bill and calls for a neutrals conference to enforce freedom of the seas. He denounces the last hour rush to war, condemns one man power and secret diplomacy, and urges impartial food embargo talks to compel belligerents to respect neutral rights.
The M. P. H. 8 group presented the three act comedy Just for Fun at the Unique Theatre last Thursday, closing the 1916 17 Lyceum Course. Students schedule another showing at the Pioneer Theatre in Powers Friday evening.
President Wilson urged Congress to declare war on the Imperial German government. The joint resolution would authorize use of all U S naval and military forces to prosecute the war and aid the Allies. As of Myrtle Point reports, final action had not yet been taken by both houses.
Senator Stone of the foreign relations committee, opposing the resolution in committee, declares he would support war if declared and vows to back it with men and money. Senator LaFollette voices strong opposition, saying the nation has no leg to stand on to justify the war.
Senator Norris voices concern that leaders may push the nation into war to protect commercial munition interests. He argues the drive for profits could burden many Americans and sully the flag with a dollar sign.
The Du Pont de Nemours Company annual report shows gross receipts of 311 million in the year ended December 31 1916, up 130 percent from 1913 14 averages. Net earnings reached 82 million with 6 percent dividends paid on debenture stock and total dividends to common stockholders. The piece notes a war profiteering angle and mentions a former Delaware senator.
Milwaukee would ban most noisy practices if the common council approves an anti noise ordinance from the health department. Prohibitions include factory whistle use for shifts, commerce noise to attract trade, dogs off leash, and night deliveries without rubber heeled shoes.
Law passed by the legislature would close Rogue River to seining only after a voter referendum. Supporters seek direct expression from the people to avoid political influence in the legislature. Until the vote, the existing law allowing seining remains in effect.
