Washington observers foresee far reaching political repercussions if war erupts in Europe. Debate centers on neutrality changes, third term chances for Roosevelt, and how overseas conflict would affect prices, farm programs, and the U S economy ahead of the 1940 election.
Charles Anson 84 retired second hand store proprietor and Muscatine Power Boat club member died at 305 1 2 East Second street after a years long illness. He was born March 27 1854 in Muscatine and married Cora Temple on Sept 2 1881. Survived by wife three children one sister and one brother. funeral Thursday at 2 pm at Hoffman Funeral Home with Dr L L Weis officiating. burial Greenwood Cemetery.
A USDA official said the administration will keep existing crop control laws in force even if war boosts exports. Secretary Wallace will address wheat and cotton belts in Kansas and Texas this week. Expansion of production is not yet under consideration.

Mrs. Elnora Duncan Martin 66 of Muscatine county died at 2 30 p m Tuesday at her daughter's home after a nine month illness with complications. Survived by two daughters Mrs Kiebe and Mrs Eva Seca dink, a sister Mrs William Martin and two brothers Guy and Clyde Duncan. Funeral Thursday 4 p m from Park Avenue Methodist Church conducted by Rev H C Hiller. Burial Greenwood Cemetery.
A proposed one cent increase in the state gasoline tax to fund secondary roads will be discussed at six hearings statewide next month. Officials from the state planning board say the tax would raise over 4 million dollars annually. Topics include distribution to counties state and cities, optional levies, and county participation in federal state programs.
The forecast covers Iowa fair tonight and Thursday with slight frost possible in north central areas and cooler conditions in the southeast on Thursday. Illinois likewise fair with cooler spell in central and north areas on Thursday. River stages on the Mississippi show Davenport and vicinity lower by about 0.6 to 0.9 feet, with La Crosse at 5.9 feet and Muscatine at 17.4 feet.
Berlin reports Goebbels told a Berlin crowd he foresees an amicable solution to the German Czech Slovak dispute within a few days. He urged peace and said the Fuehrer pledged support to the Sudetens while stressing the need for decisive action.
Greta Garbo, the actress, sails aboard the Kungsholm returning to the United States. After remaining in Europe since December 1937, she left Gothenburg Tuesday and is due in Aberdeen Thursday en route to New York.
In London the Commons heard that Hitler Mussolini Daladier and Chamberlain would meet in Munich on Thursday to seek a peaceful path over Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain announced a 24 hour postponement of mobilization while they mediate, sparking jubilation at home and relief in markets.
Premier Mussolini left Rome for Munich to mediate the German Czech crisis at Britain’s urging. He planned talks with Hitler Chamberlain and Daladier, with Roosevelt sending a personal message that may have influenced his decision. The world watched anxiously as diplomacy bent toward avoiding war.
The White House welcomed Hitler's invitation to England France and Italy for a Munich conference as very encouraging. Stephen Early said Roosevelt's cable to Hitler may be the final word in the European crisis and urged the German leader to avoid war. The administration confirmed the Munich meeting and noted Roosevelt's personal note to Mussolini.
A Berlin foreign office spokesman said no reply to President Roosevelt is likely. He stated Hitler has noted Roosevelt's telegram but no response will be sent, warning that further exchanges could continue indefinitely.
