German defenses remain firm with strong lines, signaling sustained resistance and limited breakthrough chances as Allied efforts continue. Strong ordnance and prepared fortifications anchor positions amid ongoing patrols and bombardments.
The German high command reports a decisive push south of Moyon with Beaumont stormed and 2,500 French prisoners taken. French and Allied dispatches note limited gains on the Oise front and retreating German center, with combat along much of the front and weather hindering operations.
Rome reports from the Austro Italian frontier that 300000 Austrian troops are watching the Italian border. Trieste is left with a garrison of only 20000 men.
Berlin reports the German eastern army is pressing toward the Osowiec fortress near Suwalki in Russian Poland. The fortress sits southwest of Lyck on the Lyck Bielystok line, guarding the swamped Bober River crossing as the Wehrmacht pushes forward.
During the German advance into Belgium two German companies, about five hundred men, swept a French army corps from Buissiere across the Sambre river. The French held a strong position on the southern bank with multiple regiments and artillery, yet the German assault, aided by decisive artillery and a rapid river crossing, forced a rout of the French line.
The federal reserve board approved a bankers plan to create a 1.010 billion dollar gold fund to meet U S obligations to Europe. National banks in central reserve and reserve cities will be asked to contribute though country banks are not expected to participate. Funds will be deposited in the Bank of England branch in Ottawa with an initial call of 20 to 25 million dollars. Details to be worked out next week.
Antwerp reports via London that Dendermonde and Londerzeel were evacuated by German forces. Dendermonde sits 16 miles east of Ghent and Londerzeel 11 miles northwest of Brussels. The note marks their first release from occupation since Belgium’s capital moved to Antwerp.
British Chancellor David Lloyd George spoke in Queen's Hall urging support for Field Marshal Kitchener's new army. He vowed Britain must defend Belgian neutrality, denounce the "scrap of paper" doctrine, and warned Prussia's aggression threatens Europe, calling for unity and sacrifice. He stressed the war's higher purpose to end military tyranny and urged Welshmen to enlist.
The Civic Association announced completion of an outdoor gymnasium across Lincoln Jackson Washington and Garfield school grounds. The apparatus includes a tag pole a trapeze swing and rings. Twelve boys can use the turning pole at once. A gym was placed at Jefferson school last spring and turning poles at Franklin and Garfield during summer vacation.
President Wilson indicated support for abandoning the current river and harbor bill and substituting a new resolution appropriating 12 to 15 million dollars to continue only underway projects. The move aims to offset revenue shortfalls from the war and avoid broad salary increases while extending the program with wartime economy measures. Senate filibuster and long night session dominated by Burton and Kenyon revealed a tense, red-eyed chamber as lawmakers pressed for a quorum and debated strategy.
Berlin announces German and Austrian successes across fronts. In France a decisive attack north of Neyon sees Beaumont stormed with 2,500 French captured as Allied counterattacks fail. Eastward, Germans advance on Russians while Serbians reportedly routed by Austrians. Vienna cites a new Galicia defense line awaiting a possible Japanese attack near News. Tokyo says Japanese troops landed at Laoshan Bay, near Tsing Tau.

London dispatch reports the German right wing across northeastern France is yielding, with British and French sources conceding a near superhuman effort required to win. Renewed Allied cavalry activity and movements north and west of German lines raise hopes for a possible envelopment under Von Kluck as infantry clashes intensify and exhaustion grows on both sides.
