Cyclist Hurt in Motorcycle Accident in Muscatine

James LeRoy Midkiff, 22, of 1504 West Fulham, suffered a fractured skull, broken collar bone and facial contusions in a motorcycle crash at 1:41 a.m. He was taken to Muscatine General Hospital in the Riley ambulance, where his condition was listed as fair. Police said Midkiff turned the corner from 11th Street onto Poplar. the bike skidded on slick pavement in the rain, dumping him onto the road.

Home Cottage Thefts Reported Along Maple Grove Road

The sheriff's office investigates thefts at two Maple Grove Road locations. Clinton Schmidt reports a flashlight, bedding, silverware, and binoculars missing from a cottage near the Mississippi River. Floyd Franklin says his route 5 home was pried open with rings, a gold watch, and cigarette lighters stolen.

Gannon gears up for Iowa governor bid

Des Moines AP report says House Minority Leader William Gannon of Dingo has hired Tom Higgins to run his behind the scenes drive for support as he pursues the 1970 Iowa gubernatorial race. State Democratic Chairman Clark Rasmussen named as a potential candidate. Higgins, 24, is SIC organizer and soon to finish a political science master’s, to work full time for Gannon.

Muscatine Bridge Group Votes On New Officers

The Muscatine bridge commission group will elect officers Monday at 4 p.m. in the commission office. Norbert Beckey remains chairman after a recent reappointment, with Kenneth Bartelt as vice chairman and Mike Goddard named to replace Kenneth Duncan. Other Muscatine members include Max Churchill, plus Al Sloan of New Boston and two highway representatives from the Tilingis and Iowa divisions.

The Muscatine area will receive 5000 immediately and up to 12000 by June 30 1970 under a 35000 Mi grant for migrant adult education. Muscatine Community School District will transfer funds to Eastern Iowa Community College for classes in citizenship family and vocational skills driver education and job seeking. Classes start Sept 15 in Muscatine and West Liberty with at least 166 Spanish American migrants targeted. Muscatine Farmers Barbeque Moves to Weed Park Lagoon

Muscatine’s ninth annual Farmer Businessmen’s Barbeque will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16 behind the Weed Park Lagoon. Beef will be served this year instead of chicken. Muscatine businessmen sell tickets through the Chamber of Commerce. Area farmers are invited to attend as guests.
