Four Burned When Torch Explodes at Canning Plant
At the Stokely Brothers Canning plant near Muscatine a gasoline torch used to heat soldering irons exploded injuring four employees. Clyde Gabriel Jr 17 was critically burned and rushed to Hershey hospital along with James Phillips 21 and Arthur Hill 31 all burned severely. Harold Furnas suffered minor burns. Officials said the torch had just been bought and used since Monday with about a half gallon of gasoline in the pump. Hill described pulling Gabriel from the flames and watering down burns as workers carried him out.
