A Muscatine man was charged with robbery and found not guilty by the jury. The verdict was delivered at 5 30 o clock Tuesday afternoon as the prosecution had built a strong case in the Nagel dispute.
Senator Tillman faced threats and a heavy guard when he spoke in Chicago on the race question amid objections from colored citizens and Mayor Dunne. Police and 40 detectives protected him as he argued from an American viewpoint on the race issue.
Cambridge Ills Nov 28 Special The People of Illinois vs William Nagel ended with a not guilty verdict after about two and a half hours of deliberation. The jury split on ballots 7 to 5 and 11 to 1 before acquitting Nagel amid defense-focused testimony and judge instructions viewed as favorable to the defendant. Nagel faces three additional counts similar to the trial and may gain liberty soon.
Josephine Collette and William Nagel were arrested on August 2, 1905, for the murder of Carl Brady on Island B near Muscatine. Nagel confessed and guided officers to the body. The case moved through inquest, indictments, and appeals, with possible release due to legal technicalities.
