Promoter John C Hubinger Shaped Mississippi Phone Venture
Keokuk notable John C Hubinger helped found the Mississippi Valley Telephone company in Muscatine about ten years ago. The late starch magnate faced ruin as estate details show total receipts of 10 254 and disbursements of 2 712 56 with two thirds from life insurance claims. He built an empire from starch, railways, and utilities but reckless investments drained resources, leaving a decaying Keokuk mansion and liens that overwhelm the widow’s claim. He died January 27 1908.

The Roach and Musser Hose Company held its annual masquerade ball last night at Armory C on Chestnut. About 175 couples attended and prizes were awarded for ladies and gentlemens costumes with Vanatta's orchestra providing music. Judges included Captain Norton and M P Goff.
