Muscatine School Bond Final Push Aims For Passage

About 150 residents filled a Muscatine hotel breakfast to back a $5.1 million school bond referendum set for Tuesday June 3. The plan includes a new four year high school and a Washington elementary school, with a millage increase to 12 mills. If approved the senior high would serve 1200 to 2200 students and enrollment is expected around 1400 this fall.

The Muscatine Journal publishes daily except Sundays and holidays from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. It is a Lee Enterprises member, incorporated at 331 E and S, Muscatine, Iowa 52761, with second class matter status and exclusive AP publication rights.

The notice lists subscription options with prices for Muscatine city delivery seven dollars monthly in advance and four dollars seventy five cents for other carriers. Mail subscriptions within fifty miles year rates run fifteen dollars, towns with carrier service eighteen dollars and six cents, road delivery beyond fifty miles twenty dollars. All male subscribers must pay in advance. Special delivery is offered for missed papers until 6:30 pm daily and 4:00 pm Saturdays. Dia 262-2331.

Five Cars Damaged In Muscatine Traffic Crashes

Two separate accidents in Muscatine caused damage to five vehicles. At 2:50 p.m. on Clay Street and Grand Avenue, Robert Lamb and Mae Gast collided as Gast failed to yield at a stop sign, damaging Lambs front end and Gasts right side. At 11:25 p.m. on And Street and Cedar Street, Eldon Fortune Jr. and Lemoyne Reinsager collided, with Fortunes car damaging the intersection and Reinsagers car striking a parked vehicle owned by Shari Candies of Mankato.

The Associated Press reports scattered showers expected for Memorial Day in Town with cooler tonight. Northwest areas may see warmer Friday and little change Saturday. Eastern portions could see showers Saturday with highs in the 80s and lows in the upper 50s to low 60s statewide.

Three Davis children injured in Stewart Road crash

Three Davis children Brandy 4 Ronald 3 and Mark 2 were treated and released at Muscatine General Hospital after a four car collision on Stewart Road. Olga Furnas Mikta Garcia and Barbara Bixby suffered rear end damage while a North ern Gravel Co truck blocked the traffic lane with a flat tire. The Davis car struck Garcia’s car prompting further damages. one child was later advised to seek care at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Fisher buys Kautz Realty

O. K. Fisher of Muscatine has purchased Kautz Realty, forming O. K. Fisher Realty at 221 Town Avenue. Fisher, a longtime Muscatine resident, previously led McKee Feed and Grain and Central Soya operations before joining Kautz Realty in 1968. The phone number remains 263-2966.

Muscatine utility plans polyphosphate fix for red water

Muscatine Power and Water outlines new steps to curb red water by adding poly phosphates to sequester iron and manganese. Board approved the plan. equipment purchase and install to take several months. Peak pumpage reached 15 million gallons daily in 1968, with two wells added in 1968 and four more in 1969 as demand rose. Local power plant expansion progresses with a 66 000 kilowatt turbo generator, operation phased from Sept 1 to Nov 1, plus downtown improvement to improve service and voltage. Additional substations planned to support growing residential load and downtown distribution upgrades.
