Cutworms Active in Early Planted Corn Fields

Eugene Mathern, County Extension Director, reports cutworm damage in early planted corn. He advises farmers to inspect fields with no soil applied insecticide or only 0.5 lb aldrin or heptachlor. Treat active fields with 2 lb toxaphene or 3.4 lb endrin per acre sprayed over the row. Night feeding and surface-contact kill young worms. larger larvae require reaching insecticides. Cultivation after spraying may aid kill but late treatment is not highly optimistic. broadcast 2 lb heptachlor-treated fields should be protected from cutworms.
