The Wrong House Incident in Los Angeles

Irving Steinman received a call asking if he owned the house at 142 St. Andrews. The caller, David D. Davis, said he tore down a similar house nearby. Steinman valued his property at about $5,000 and claimed the wrecking was not an act of God but an act of mortal man, hoping to claim wrecker’s liability insurance.

Oklahoma base sergeants win diet prize in Hippo program

Two Army sergeants at a southwest Oklahoma military base win the grand prize in Operation Hippo. Sgts. Conrad Tillick Jr. and Press Young jointly shed 42 pounds during an eight month weight loss program. Tillick started at 448 pounds and Young at 490. Their prize is a reenlistment for another tour of duty.

Better Than Candy in Nursery Eating Habits

Adelaide Glaser, a home economist from Western New Mexico University, told the Institute of Food Technologists that nursery school children can be steered away from candy toward carrot sticks, celery, apples, fruit juice, milk, cheese, asparagus, broccoli, beans and bell peppers. She stressed bite sized portions and noted the use of toothpick spears such as baby beets as part of the effort.

Wiltonston area highway project under way

Initial stages of a quarter million dollar improvement on highways 6 and 38 west of Wiltonston include widening the Mud Creek bridge and railroad viaduct. Reilly Construction Co. of Ottumwa handles earth moving, while Olliphant Construction widens the viaduct to 30 feet. Matt Fox Jr. builds the new Mud Creek bridge. completion targeted by July 2 pending weather.

No Transistor For This Bear

A 200 pound black bear on the Olympic Peninsula was fitted with a small radio collar by the State Department of Natural Resources to track movements for forest damage research. The collar later fell off, leaving officials with “a radio, but no bear” as the bear went back into the wilderness.

Des Moines AP reports major floor leaders in the Iowa Legislature plan to wind up the 139 day session by next Saturday. Senate moves included night sessions on pari mutuel betting while House members show weak turnout for night or Saturday meetings. Even with daily sessions leaders face huge work and unresolved revenue and appropriations bills.
