Madrid reports proceed without a hitch as El Alfonzo prepares to be crowned this Saturday at age sixteen. Buildings glow with decorations while twenty thousand foreigners flood the capital. Foreign ambassadors meet the new king as princes arrive. Dr. Jabez L. M. Curry represents America.
A May dispatch from Naples reports Mount Vesuvius showing activity with lava flowing from the crater toward Pompeii and hot cinders erupting intermittently. The famed southern Italian volcano, long deemed slumbering, has a history of sudden violent outbursts, including the AD 79 eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum.
At a London West Indian Club dinner Honorable Arthur Ponsonby lauded Roosevelt and American aid to Martinique victims and urged Britain to match the generosity for St Vincent and British sufferers. He warned against British donors overlooking their own kinsmen on St Vincent.

Cedar Rapids May 15 Special The State Federation executive committee reports completion of the affiliation of the mine workers ending the noted contention. President Holder urges radical reforms including a salaried lecturer and organizer, an attorney for federation interests, no officers with political office, moving the convention to February, and broader executive duties. Governor Cummins spoke on The Workingman and the State.
Des Moines on May 15 John Cownie of the board of control urged Iowa to set aside yearly funds to insure state buildings and build a sinking fund to cover fire losses. He said private insurers won’t offer reasonable terms for older buildings, so the state should self insure.
John Benson, a well known Storm Lake farmer, unhitched a team from a stone boat and wrapped lines about his body, fell, and was dragged to death by a four horse team. He was a widower with one child.
Esther Dowie, daughter of John Alexander Dowie, died from burns after a Wednesday accident at Zion Home. No physician was summoned per sect beliefs as flames from an alcohol lamp ignited her hair and wrapper, leaving her body severely burned while family prayed.
Kid Noble took the stand in his murder trial for the Morgan brothers saloon killing on January 21. He recalls little after knocking Morgan down, mentions a gun taken from his hand, and says he traveled to Omaha and Enid before being captured in Oklahoma. He cites a claim by railroader Tom Jones that Morgan caused his wife’s infidelity, and Morgan’s possession of a garter from Noble’s wife, as emerging motive.
New York May 15 Lewis Nixon resigns as leader of Tammany Hall in a abrupt departure amid factional strife. He blames interference from the Kitchen Cabinet led by Andrew Freedman and the Board of Review and says his orders were routinely cabled to England before execution. Nixon vows his resignation is final and immediate.

Marshalltown Iowa May 15. The body of Michael McCarthy an inmate of the county farm was found about three miles west of the city. He died from exposure after leaving the farm early Saturday night and getting money from his guardian in town. He drank, became lost attempting to return to the farm and perished before discovery.
