The defense argues Kid Noble is a young stranger deserving of mercy as the state details the alleged first degree murder of Tom Morgan on January 21 1901. County Attorney Ingham outlines premeditated malice and the saloon shooting with key witness testimony to come.
The twenty fifth annual tournament of the Iowa State Sportsmen's association began in Ottumwa this morning under favorable conditions. Sharpshooters Marshall Budd Powers and other nationally known marksmen are present.
The Tri City Street Railway increased wages by ten percent for 160 employees this morning in Davenport Iowa. The move was announced in the May 13 special report.
Will Ferguson, a ~45 year old bachelor farmer north of Kinross Wellman Iowa, shot himself in the head with a revolver in his car after giving directions to a hired hand. He had recently been injured by a pitchfork accident and may have suffered temporary insanity from worry and loss of strength. He was well to do and never married.
The State of Iowa faces trial of Kid Noble with opening statements by County Attorney Ed P Ingham and E M Warner. A 12 member jury was selected by 10 40 AM and will be kept together during the proceedings. The case is expected to be lengthy with Noble facing three attorneys and his brother in court.
Muscatine shows strong support for the Y M C A building project with a new $5,000 gift from Dr S G Stein. Subscriptions total $32,090 with $8,000 more needed to reach $40,000. Major donors include Thomas Irvine P M Musser and Dr S G Stein. Over 200 citizens have contributed, calendar fund pledges from 100+ supporters. A board meeting tonight will set a building committee and accelerate construction once the final funds are secured.
Market dispatch shows hog receipts 19 000 with open steady to 50 higher closes. Cattle receipts 3 500 with steady close. Sheep 5 000 steady. Wheat 58 cars, corn 121, oats 286. tomorrow’s expected runs 20 35 60 23 000. Northwest and Liverpool grain quotes noted. beef and cattle prices listed.
Des Moines briefs note average temperatures were below normal with increased cloudiness and showery days. Conditions favored pastures meadows and small grain and corn acreage rises were seen across districts while planting lagged slightly but progressed, and seed germination remained generally satisfactory in early fields.

A committee will consult local merchants and professionals to secure legitimate attractions following Davenport’s June event. About 500 dollars has been pledged by local businessmen.
Columbus Junction May 13. Elder J S Roth of Grinnell will hold meetings at the city hall this week beginning Wednesday night at eight o'clock. He represents a denomination opposed to polyamy. Committees are making arrangements for Decoration Day.
August Mandinn aged 26 was found dead in Cedar Rapids on May 13 from the effects of poison. It is not known whether it was self inflicted, accidental, or a crime. His father, a wealthy man, resides in Sweden.
Rev B M Boydston longtime Iowa conference Methodist pastor in Lone Tree dies after a lingering illness. Survived by his wife a married daughter and two sons. Funeral Wednesday at 1 30 p m in Lone Tree with Rev W G Thorn presiding and many preachers expected to attend.
At Cork's Run Panhandle yards near Pittsburg on May 13 a naphtha leak caused two explosions and a spreading blaze. Twenty four people are dead and over 300 injured, with many in serious condition. The fire spread through sewers and along the Chartiers valley, fueled by a broken switch light and a leaking car, making this one of the oil region's worst disasters.
Pine Tree Lumber Co and Anthes Lumber Co held their annual meetings in Muscatine on Wednesday May 7. Pine Tree directors include F Weyerhauser F C A Denkmann M G Norton W H Laird Peter Musser P M Musser and W Musser with officers to be elected in Little Falls Minn. Anthes raised capital from 25000 to 75000 and elected C R Musser E M Hoover R D Musser Geo P Anthes as secretary.
Fort de France reports a cloud over St Pierre after the eruption. Survivors flee toward Fort de France as officials burn bodies and refugees flood the town. Food is scarce and starvation and exposure loom, with fears of an epidemic amid intense heat and decomposing corpses.
