Kin Informed of Wesselman Air Fatality

Relatives of Warrant Officer Gary L. Wesselman 23 of Montebello California learned he died in Viet Nam on April 19. He served as air commander with the 15th Aviation Battalion and 182nd Assault Helicopter Group stationed in Vinh Long. His helicopter crashed in dense fog returning from a rescue mission. Services were held April 28 at St. Benedict’s Church with interment in Resurrection Cemetery South San Gabriel.

Attempted Break-In at Wilson's Hardware Store

An early morning attempted break-in at Wilson's Hardware Store 1005 E 2nd Street failed after thieves punched out a rear door lock but could not get past a heavy door bar. No injuries reported and no merchandise description provided. Local police are investigating the incident.

Man killed in Des Moines fiery chase crash

DES MOINES AP A high speed chase after an alleged shooting ended in a fiery crash. William Lee Shaffer 21 Des Moines died after his car hit a utility pole bounced into a tree and crashed into a house. Police found a 22 caliber pistol where the car had rolled.

After a four day trip the Iowa House approved a plan to distribute about 120 million dollars yearly for state school aid. The measure, authored by Rep Petersen, seeks to equalize opportunities and ease local property tax loads while awaiting Senate review and a companion funding bill.

Gary Bell Receives ISU Veterinary Award

Gary L. Bell of 213 W. 6th Street received a gold seal for more than one year of service on a publication at Iowa State University Ames. He was among 53 veterinary medicine students honored for work on the Iowa State University Veterinarian. The award was presented at the Honors and Awards Program at Memorial Union in Great Heil this week.
