A mother Mrs Carlos and her daughter Anna were found living in a stable in Washington. In police court they were declared demented and sent to the government sane asylum. Once part of Georgetown's respected social circle the family fell on hard times after multiple deaths. The mother aged and frail could not work while the daughter’s mind had been shattered by illness.
At a Double Bridges schoolhouse spelling event in Vienna Illinois on March 22 Frank Rushing and John Adams quarreled over a girl. Adams shot Rushing in the back after the contest and then wounded the district teacher Greely Jones before escaping.

Ley, chairman of the senate military committee, opposes the Root bill and expects the committee to report adversely. He adds that all military men owe a debt of gratitude to Miles for his exhaustive exposition before the committee.
Indianapolis March 22 Congressman Robert W. Miers of the Second district said he would retire from the race for renomination. He explained he did not wish to engage in a contest likely to breed bitterness.
A scaffold at Holy Trinity Catholic church in New Albany collapsed during repairs, throwing Irwin Brown of Indianapolis and Frank Losson of New Albany sixty feet. Brown died within an hour from multiple fractures, while Losson suffered a skull fracture and arm injuries and was not expected to survive.
Gov Gen Wood of Cuba arrived in Washington and met with the president. They discussed Cuban issues, chiefly the U.S. evacuation of Cuba by May 1.

Washington reports three major measures passed in Congress on March 22. The senate approved the president protection bill by 52 to 15 and repealed the war revenue taxes. The secretary of war will detail a guard from the regular army to protect the president with standards for dress arms and equipment.

St. Paul dispatch reports a great fire in Winnipeg Manitoba starting at midnight in the Canadian Pacific railroad sheds. The blaze threatens the entire business district as communications are cut.
In Princeton New Jersey on March 22 ex president Grover Cleveland said he is not troubled by a Bryan editorial denouncing him as a traitor and ingrate. He dodged questions about uniting the Democratic party for the next presidential campaign saying he does not care to express further opinion at present.
Chicago reports a rumor from railway circles that Harriman interests may have acquired Moore Leeds and Reid holdings to seize control of the Rock Island. The tale suggests closing a deal within ninety days and notes a broader plan linking Rock Island with Southern Pacific and Santa Fe to shape western and southwestern freight routes.
Cambridge won the annual Oxford Cambridge boat race by five lengths in nineteen minutes nine seconds. The result was anticipated as Cambridge led from the start. The Oxford crew collapsed after crossing the finish line amid cold and windy conditions.
