One Feudal King Still On Throne in Africa
Jan McCausland profiles Barotseland’s Litunga Mwanuwina Lewanika I as the last feudal king in Africa. Amid Queen Victoria photos and a pro‑British stance, he contends with fading Lozi traditions, seeks London contact, and recalls a 1900 protectorate agreement. He is 80 with five wives, 31 children, and an admiral’s uniform gifted in 1908.
