Fire in Bizbee Arizona June 29 threatened the town area of ten acres. A gasoline explosion at the Colorado Hotel caused a major blaze. Over 50 residences and more than 200 houses in Chihuahua Hill burned before the fire was checked by dynamiting damaged buildings. High winds and scant water worsened the disaster.
In Chicago on June 29 Miss Essie Fay a 22 year old performer at Big Ottos Wild Animal Show Riverview Park had her head guarded by the lion as it clamped its jaws around her. Spectators gasped while six trainers fended off the beast and carried her to safety. She lay unconscious for about thirty minutes and was treated by Dr. George A. Miller.
In Houston Virginia on June 29 Judge Barksdale read jury instructions in the Loving case. The court, crowded beyond prior records, favored the prisoner generally. Insanity defense was not found established by the defense.
Fort Worth hotels prepare for the Griges act by stocking nine foot sheets in lodging houses. The law takes effect July 12 but hoteliers begin compliance now after a Travelers Protective Association demand.
Des Moines, June 29. After July 4 the last maternity home in the city may close. A new law regulating such institutions goes into effect, placing them under strict supervision. From thirteen homes six months ago only five remain. It is believed none will survive the restrictions. What happens to the girls remains a concern.

Three second class yachts Marble Head Chewink VIII and Spokane selected to represent the United States in races with Mormon boats at Kiel Germany August 15 shipped today on the steamship Silvia for Hamburg.
The YWCA arranges a large tent at Chautauqua this summer to serve as lodging with compartments and individual cots rented per night at a nominal fee. By day the tent will also function as a rest room with staff to assist visitors, and lawn seating will be provided for comfort and social gathering.
H C Reich of Mystic Hawkeye Lumber, missing for a week, face a $3700 shortage revealed by accounts. A suit against his bondsmen is filed in Centerville while Carl McCaully of Moravia sues, claiming $600 loss from a note. In Atlanta June 29 Hoke Smith was sworn in as Georgia governor. He urged legislation to curb corporate influence with registration of corporate reps, railroads barred from free passes, and limits on corporate political contributions. He called for constitutional changes on voting standards and vowed to use office power to prevent lynching.
A Pittsfield report describes tight security around John D. Rockefeller at Onota farm. Guards patrol lakefront property and prevent access to the house. Rockefeller arrived late Thursday night and is said to be away from Pittsfield at present.
Residents report a two week span of oat damage as green bugs swarm Lake township fields. Farmers prepare a county wide campaign to combat the pests attacking oats, threatening grain yields across Muscatine.

A ten ton steel cylinder filled with steam at 120 psi was opened without reducing pressure and exploded at the Schenectady Sand Stone Brick plant in Schenectady New York. The blast killed two men and damaged part of the facility.
President Roosevelt announces appointments at Oyster Bay New York on June 29. Philip M. Brown named secretary of the embassy at Constantinople and Peter Augustus Jay named secretary of the embassy at Tokyo. The President signed the promotion of medical inspector P H Rixey to medical director, currently surgeon general of the navy.

St Louis reports Miss Mary Phillips formerly of St Louis is engaged to Jacob A Riis the noted philanthropist and friend of President Roosevelt The elder daughter of Richard F Phillips a cotton broker in the city Mr Phillips says Roosevelt wrote Riis congratulating him on the engagement claiming he had fulfilled the divine intention.
Beatrice Nebraska June 29 a band of Indians marches on Beatrice swearing vengeance on General L W Colby. The chief seeks his daughter Lost Bird who Colby has Colby is armed and the town is in great excitement.
Sheriff Griffin of Monroe county Missouri abducted Grenial Allison from Albia Iowa after a request for requisition papers was refused by Gov. Cummins. Allison was taken to Missouri to face trial on unspecified charges.
Kansas City, June 29. Attorney General Hadley asks all Missouri railroads to cancel thousands of state passes held by nonemployees so the three month two cent fare test can be fair. He notes no anti-pass law exists in Missouri.
Miss May Sutton of California defeated Miss Morton 2-0 in the all England lawn tennis championship at Wimbledon. Sutton played faultlessly and never allowed Morton a chance.
Counsel for Harry K Thaw won an order directing District Attorney Jerome to show cause in supreme court why a second trial should not be moved to the October term. The proceedings set for next Monday require the DA to justify delaying the trial. The location is New York City with June 29 dated filing.
An unknown man, likely a stranger, fell from the east river bridge into the Iowa River near Columbus Junction around 7:30 PM. The body had not been recovered by press time, though train crew reported the incident. Searches continued as locals speculated about the victim’s identity.
