Oceanographer Bruce Heezen dies at sea during research cruise
Memorial service planned at Lamont-Doherty Observatory for Bruce C. Heezen, famed Muscatine born oceanographer who mapped the ocean floor. Heezen died at age 53 off Iceland aboard NR-1 after a heart attack during a new expedition. He led key work on abyssal plains and sea floor spreading with Maurice Ewing and Marie Tharp, published over 400 papers and several books. Heezen's career included long tenure at Lamont-Doherty and pivotal discoveries about tectonic plates and ancient volcanic ash layers in the Mediterranean. He is survived by his mother Esther H. Dauch of Pittsburgh.

Fourth of July story hour at Musser Library
The Musser Public Library hosts a Fourth of July themed story time featuring the film Ben and Me about a mouse aiding Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Capt. William Law of the Muscatine Fire Department will discuss fire safety. Story time runs in the library meeting room from 9:16 to 10:45 a.m. on Wednesdays for children ages three through six.

Traffic Death Toll Forecast For July Fourth Weekend
The National Safety Council estimates 500 to 600 people may die in traffic accidents over the July 4 weekend in Chicago. The worst Independence Day toll was 758 in 1972 for a four day observance. Last year’s three day weekend saw 497 deaths.

Three arrests and six thefts reported by Muscatine police
Police reported three arrests on Monday for drunken driving and public intoxication and six thefts. Suspects included Jose Salazar a 28 year old arrested after an accident at E Second and Mulberry, Cindy Hidlebaugh 20 charged with public intoxication at South End Sun Mart, and Marla Young 19 arrested in her Baker Avenue car. Reported thefts included tools and fishing gear from Robert Varney, a tape player and five tapes from Vicky Parent, a black Huffy bike from George Sturms, a turb an wheel cover from Victor Wiedeman, a green and white Stingray bike from Sandy Horton, and a car battery from Berry Vandygriff.
