Property Bought For New Welfare Office In Muscatine

Muscatine county purchases the two story frame home at 314 Walmar Street near the courthouse to house the social welfare department. The board of supervisors will likely formalize the purchase around 14 000 dollars and seek district court approval from Judge Matthew Westrate. The move will ease crowding on the courthouse floors and spare seniors and others from climbing stairs to access welfare services. The 1933 origin of the office and its current third floor location near the grand jury room are noted, with possible use of vacated space for county records. The Grace M Oliver estate owns the nearby home, connected to Mrs. Oliver who died in 1900.
