First Ballot Fails to Nominate at Democratic National Convention
Baltimore June 28 After a long night the Democratic National Convention opened voting for the presidential nomination. No candidate reached the necessary two thirds as Champ Clark led with 4044 votes to Wilson 324. Absent 2. The roll showed Clark strong in Indiana and California while Underwood Harmon and others divided votes. The convention adjourned to 4 p.m. with no nomination and a likely deadlock ahead.

The street and alley committee, city engineer, and city attorney will study the matter, as ground here could become valuable for residences or factories once sawmill activity ends. Nathaniel Boardman Cole aged 82 died suddenly at his Sweetland township residence after years of quiet vitality. Born December 3 1830 in Green River New York he lived in Berkshire and Columbia counties before moving to Muscatine Iowa in 1885. He leaves wife Hannah Mary Henneker and children Sarah Van Frankel Darius Albert and Charlotte A Cole. Funeral at Melpine church Sunday at 11 conducted by Rev Cruly and Rev Berg with burial at Melpine cemetery.
