No County Ticket Debated by Progressive Delegates

Delegates at the Muscatine county Progressive convention decided to present no county ticket this year. West Liberty men largely represented the gathering with Halstead presiding and Brooke secretary. Republicans and Democrats named delegates for state and congressional conventions as meetings adjourned for the afternoon debate.

Tariff aims to exceed estimates in tax plan

Democratic leader Underwood told the house the new tariff would yield 292 million dollars annually, 22 million above estimates, while income tax would raise 85 million, ten million under estimates due to partial year taxation. He urged increasing the treasury’s tax-collection fund from one to one and a half million.

Steamer Sidney Struck by Violent Storm Wrecks Railways

A third violent storm of the week swept across Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa causing massive damage. Railroads suffered severe washouts and trains were crippled while rivers flooded towns including La Crosse Freeburg New Albin Lansing and Viroqua. The steamer Sidney with 1000 aboard battled the storm and finally reached port amid chaos. casualties and injuries were reported as lightning struck farms and a tobacco factory collapsed.
