Vacant House Marks Civil War Battle in Iowa Area
A derelict house on the Missouri side of the Des Moines river is a relic of the Civil War. The Joseph Benning house in Croton, Iowa, shows a cannonball scar from the Battle of Athens in 1861. Athens Missouri once a river town with 400 people, is now a ghost town of eight families. A marker at Croton notes the engagement as Iowa’s northern Civil War battle, though scholars assign that distinction to Salineville, Ohio, in 1863. The story recounts Home Guard units from Iowa and Missouri and raids by both sides, with Athens camps and supply lines linked to St. Louis headquarters.
