Fred C. Smith who escaped from Leavenworth on St Patrick’s Day 1919 is back in federal custody after a 16 year pursuit spanning Hawaii California and Texas. He had worked as a ship chief engineer after a Navy stint and was captured in a sailors home at Staten Island New York. Director J Edgar Hoover praised the cooperative investigation.
