Area School Bill Passes Through Iowa House Narrowly

The Iowa House approved S. F. 616 creating an area school district bail-out, sending it to Governor Hughes. It provides 4.5 million in state aid on a current basis to speed future payments and includes a 0.4 mill levy for land and building costs. Representatives Schmarje and Hicklin opposed the conference report and final passage, citing concerns over control and funding. The district covers Muscatine Scott and Clinton counties and parts of Cedar and Louisa.

Claim Ruling On Livestock Slain by Dogs

Muscatine county supervisors set a new policy for livestock loss claims due to wild dogs. Claimants must have carcass verification by County Assessor John Graham within 24 hours of death. Development Head Appoints 2 Committees

Muscatine Development Corporation president George Shepley announced two new committees at a noon board meeting in Hotel Muscatine. W. R. Robirds was named chairman of the finance study committee joined by John B. Rigger M. R. Morgan Sam Banks D. W. Carver C. D. Ager and Tarry Hahn. Ed Maher chairs the housing committee with Max Collins O. K. Fisher Glen Bloom and Keith Herrick. The group also reviewed Harold Ogilvie’s prospect report and road conditions in the industrial park area.

Office Staff Honors Adult English Class Party

The Office of Economic Opportunity staff hosted a party at Port City Community Center to honor women in the basic education English class begun October 1. Prizes went to several attendees. Dolly Sharp won the door prize. gifts were given by center staff and Mary Faith Hart. George Elsasser presented flowers. lunch was served by Mary Faith Hart and others.

Awning Blaze Doused at Lawrence Tax Service Corner

Muscatine firemen extinguished a small early morning blaze at the Lawrence Tax Service corner of 6th Street and Mulberry Avenue. A resident heard a sound like a small explosion before the fire. Minor damages to the awning were reported.

Migrant Ministry Work Camp Opens in Muscatine

Youth workers from the South Iowa Conference arrived for a Senior High Youth Work camp at Muscatine. Rev Frank Greenwood directed the project with Carter Johnson assisting. Tasks included sorting clothes painting and carpentry for the Migrant Ministry thrift store and day care. 25 dollar participation covered travel and meals. The group stayed at Musserville church and planned evening activities.

Painting Nurses Quarters by Methodist Youth Camp

Four Methodist youths from the South Iowa Conference Youth Work camp paint the nurses quarters at the Neighborhood center in Muscatine for migrant ministry. The group includes Pamela Wilcoxson from Lamont, Cindy McCarthy of Guthrie Center, Cathi Head from Newton, and Mike Fisher of Muscatine, ages 15 to 17.

Police Check Minor Thefts and Vandalism

Minor vandalism at schools and thefts are under investigation by Muscatine police. A 1963 Ford convertible parts theft was reported at 613 Grandview Ave. A purse theft occurred at a grocery store near 700 E. 2nd St. Items stolen include a straw purse with a gold piece, a check for $5, and a checkbook. Youths were chased from a school roof and a padlock tampering was reported at McKinley school.
