Morison Attacks the New History Critics in Letter
Harvard historian Samuel Morison denounces the notion of an imperialist America and defends the nation’s record on race. He recalls France’s Dreyfus era slurs, British attitudes toward Jamaicans and Indians, and argues the United States has tolerated minorities better than many peers while urging faster progress on race relations. He cites Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and prominent U.S. figures to show American pluralism and resilience amid decline in older standards.
