Inspection for Meat Law Costs in Iowa Set
DES MOINES AP Inspections of 735 Iowa meat plants under a new federal law will cost about 1.2 million dollars annually. State Agriculture Secretary L. B. Liddy said he may seek legislative funding to cover the inspections, or consider federal control or shared financing. The law likely requires adding inspectors to the current 63 man state team, with Iowa signing an agreement with the U S Department of Agriculture to train state inspectors. Plants processing under 20 000 pounds yearly are exempt from state inspection but fall under the federal statute. Federal officials surveyed Iowa and are satisfied with current operations, though two plants recently closed voluntarily for not meeting state standards.
