Bitter Words After Lincoln’s Death Spur Village Ducking

Mason City in April 1865 faced shock as word of Lincoln’s assassination arrived. Mary Ragan stirred tempers with bitter remarks, sparking a mass execution of public shaming actions that led to women submerging her in water and forcing an oath of loyalty before a village parade. The episode reflects Civil War tensions and local memory preserved in the Cerro Gordo Republican.
