Senate Passes Rights Bill After Long Debate
After 81 days of debate the Senate approved the civil rights bill by 73 to 47 and sent it to the House for quick approval. President Johnson praised the passage as a major step toward equal opportunities. Critics in the South warned of political repercussions. The measure bans racial discrimination in public accommodations and employment, expands federal power to desegregate, and increases the attorney general’s enforcement reach. Iowa fire chiefs received community service awards at Iowa State University during a three day meeting, with Gov. Harold Hughes presenting the honors.
