No Cause for Rate Increase Warns Former Iowa Official
Dos Mathea Iowa June 19 Former railroad commissioner Clifford Thorne now counsel for shippers argued before the Interstate Commerce Commission that carriers are enjoying historic earnings and not entitled to sharp rate hikes. He said railroads seek higher rates to burden Americans and cited large surplus profits, tax burdens, and high costs for materials as factors. He warned against government ownership and warned that further tax, loan, and wage pressures could trigger social and political upheaval.
