Senate committee adds to small buttons duty
Washington July 20 The Senate finance committee changed the tariff on pearl buttons and blanks as fixed by the Underwood bill in the revision of the buttons tariff law. The new rate lowers the duty on small buttons and raises duties on larger buttons. Muscatine manufacturers reacted cautiously, while D A Willis of the Vionha Pearl Turton Co said the change would aid the pearl button industry if final. Nine-tenths of Muscatine buttons are small. larger buttons need less protection. The Underwood tariff previously set duties at 40 percent ad valorem on all buttons and blanks regardless of size.
