River season opens slowly on the Mississippi with few rafters
The river trade between St. Louis and St. Paul moves slowly as only half a dozen rafts have been seen. The Quincy first stopped at Muscatine this year and the big side wheelers from St. Louis bring cargo and passengers toward St. Paul. Rafters Lizzie Gardner Ben Hershey and North Star are the remaining rafts, following the Staples Van Sant fire that destroyed several boats. The article suggests rafters will not be rebuilt to replace the lost fleet, signaling the death knell for the upriver raft industry.
