Seven Months Change Sugar Prices from Peak to Decline
In 1974 US raw sugar prices spiked to 65.5 cents a pound while consumer sugar cost a five pound bag at 3.14. Last week raw sugar fell to 15 cents and the five pound bag to 2.09. Producers fear Congress price support as prices collapse and stockpiles linger. Consumers pay the price, stockpiling and miscalculation shift costs. An encouraging drop allows easier spoons of sugar at breakfast.

Time for direct presidential election is not yet
A Virginia legislator Robert Whitehead called the direct election bill a repeat burden. A Senate subcommittee approved a constitutional amendment for direct presidential election, arguing it would fix flaws in the current Electoral College yet risk federal control and destabilize federalism. Proponents cite broad support and polls while critics warn of radical change and minority loss in a purely national vote.
