Spray and Pruning Plan Is Saving Elms on Campus
The May Grounds Maintenance notes Pennsylvania State University preserves over 400 elms along campus paths from Dutch elm disease. Head Lewis E. Barr says a simple rule keeps trees healthy, with pruning to reduce beetle attack, checks for damaged limbs, and sealing wounds with black tree paint. A spring fog spray using 25 percent DDT in xylene and water targets elm bark beetle, while a dormant oil spray controls scale to protect the elms.
