Iowa Veterans Parade in Muscatine Marks 50th Frontline Departure

The Grand Army of the Department of Iowa reviews in Muscatine under Governor B. F. Carroll to honor the fiftieth anniversary of the first Iowa troop departure for the front. Thousands line streets as veterans from 61 march with the Shelby Norman corps and Sons of Veterans, while the governor and staff observe from the reviewing stand.

Illinois Governor Urges Swift Action on Deep Waterway Power Sites

Gov Deneen urges rapid enactment to enable Illinois to acquire water power sites for the deep waterway project. He states the state must negotiate with the federal government before July 1 1912 and requires a law by July 1 1911, with emergency clause if possible. The measure, stalled previously, is reintroduced in both houses with Senator Johnson leading in the Senate.

Secret of Havemeyer Still Elusive in Sugar Trust Inquiry

Washington June 14 The sugar trust probe pressed Charles R Heike for details on Henry Havemeyer influence and the merger of the United States Sugar Refining Co. Heike claimed no special ties while Edwin F Atkins testified Havemeyer ruled the firm from 2000 000 of 90 000 000 in holdings. Directors books showed Baltimore refinery sale for 181 000 but no clear plan for its abandonment. The Camden plant purchase was deemed poor location and questions remained on American Sugar Refining control via loans to Adolph Segal and collateral stock.

Seamen Strike Expands Across Ports and Ships

London reports a launched seamen and firemen strike at Liverpool and other ports with initial port actions tying up trans Atlantic liners including the Teutonic and Empress of Ireland. Some ships sailed despite the walkout while dock workers stayed aloof and planned an international halt.

Circulators Meet in Annual Session in Chicago

In Chicago the International Circulation Managers association held its second day of meetings. Third Assistant Postmaster General Britt urged honest publishers to voice views on post office policy and said dishonest publishers have no future with the department. Keokuk Fire Captain Jos. Samuels Convicted of Wife Murder

In Keokuk Iowa Judge Hamilton postponed sentencing after a new trial motion by Jos Samuels former fire department captain. Defense claimed insanity and alleged wife Essie Samuels was unfaithful. Jurors found Samuels guilty of murdering his wife March 3 after returning from a moving picture show.

Tariff Bills Up In Both Houses

Washington June 14 National legislators debated tariff measures in both chambers. In the Senate Canadian reciprocity moved forward with a report from Finance Committee chair Penrose and planned extended discussion as Senators McCumber and Curtis signaled upcoming speeches. The House pursued wool duties with speeches for and against reductions amid ongoing committee investigations.

Prizes Awarded At Iowa State University Commencement

At Iowa City 355 degrees were conferred at the fifty first annual commencement of the State University of Iowa. Honorary degrees went to Alice French Davenport and Randall Parrish Chicago. Prizes included the Lowden mathematics prize to Charles Preston Davenport and other awards to Ruth Ellison and William Norton.
