First Woman Governor Chosen for Grenada Island
Dr Hil da Byroe, a Grenadian born physician and mother of two, has been sworn in as the first woman governor of a British Commonwealth country. The five year assignment places executive power in the hands of Grenada's elected cabinet, with Byroe stating men on the island support her appointment and noting few women have risen to high office. She emphasized she remains a typical feminine woman who enjoys clothes and the freedoms of being a woman. Her husband Peter Bynoe, an ex RAF officer and architect, supports her career. The island of Grenada, Windward Islands, has about 89 000 residents and is largely agricultural.
