Wasteful Haste Proves Slower in German Car Test
In West Germany two cars with identical setups ran nearly 1000 miles from Hamburg to Rimini. One driver chased speed, the other avoided risk and stayed steady. The fast driver finished only 81 minutes ahead, averaging under 50 mph after 20 hours 12 minutes, while braking 1839 times. The slower driver used 652 brakes and completed in 20 hours 43 minutes. A Cologne to Brenner test had faster car 16 hours 52 minutes versus 21 minutes longer for the slower car, with higher fuel use and wear on parts for the speed demon. The results suggest speed brings little benefit and adds costs.

Peace Talks Influence Wall Street and Viet Nam Debate
A Wall Street dominated view emerges that peace talks could boost markets while risking commitments to allies. Howard Stein of the Dreyfus Fund joins a broader sentiment: war costs drain the economy, dollars flow abroad, and markets react to possible peace with gains and hazards. The column weighs arguments about global power shifts, Communist dynamics, and historic analogies as investors weigh the cost of peace versus the need to protect national interests.
