Fire swept the century old Victoria Hotel in Plainfield New Jersey killing at least two people and injuring eighteen with additional missing. Firefighters recovered two bodies as they searched the ruins and looked for more victims.
Des Moines AP reports Polk County District Judge Harry Perkins weighed jurisdiction in a suit brought by David W. Belin challenging the temporary reapportionment plan approved May 26 1965 for not allowing subdistricting of counties. The filing seeks a state court ruling by Oct 1 through a special legislative session, while federal proceedings continue. Iowa Solicitor General Timothy McCarthy warned duplication if state jurisdiction is granted while a federal panel handles the matter.
Dr. Paul W. Pixler, current Lindenwood College dean, was named dean of Coe College by the board of trustees. A native Iowan, Pixler previously served as vice president and dean at Iowa Wesleyan College.
The Cudahy Packing Co may reopen its Omaha plant closed since April 8 after a labor dispute with UPWA Local 60. A two engine C123 transport crash killed at least eight Americans. Government figures claimed heavy enemy losses, but U S officials cautioned totals were unconfirmed. Evacuation efforts followed as rescuers retrieved the dead and wounded amid ongoing patrols.
