Room Additions Solve Space Problems for Many Families
Americans spent nearly $16 billion last year adding space to their homes to avoid moving. Most outgrew their present houses, preferred staying put near schools and work, and financed with favorable rates. Common additions include 12x16 or 16x20 rooms, with family rooms most popular for leisure and entertaining. Costs run $14 to $15 per square foot depending on plumbing and wiring. The Douglas Fir Plywood Association offers an Add a Room Manual with guidance on adding bedrooms or family rooms, financing, decoration, and contractor tips. For a copy, send 15 cents to Tacoma Washington.
