Sertoma program highlights MHS band at Muscatine Cannery
Muscatine Sertoma Club held its June noon meeting at the Cannery with Larry Hintz former Muscatine High School band director as guest speaker. Jim Herwig, this year’s John Philip Sousa Award winner, described a secret ballot process for selecting the past year’s outstanding band member. Herwig noted honors with the 1972 UI Honor Band and All-State Band, plans to study math at Muscatine Community College, and ongoing musical activity. Past Sousa winners listed: 1968 Jean Kathrein, 1969 Tom Leslie, 1970 Peter Smith, 1971 Jon Jarret. A surprise guest was announced for next week.

Dr. George Woodward announces a summer session of speed reading classes in Muscatine. The program promises reading any average length book in under an hour with better understanding, plus study techniques, faster note taking, and improved concentration. Sessions demand weekly attendance for 12 students, with orientation lectures offered free on June 10, 12, 13, and 14 at The Musser Public Library Conference Room.

Carver's Jet Wins Flagship of U S Industrial Fleet
In Reading Pa at the annual aviation show Roydd Carver of Bundag Inc won best industrial plane for his jet owned by Carver Muscating. The award cited exterior and interior design safety features and crew knowledge. Carver, holder of a First Pilot's license for Falcon class jets, noted Falcon's speed and altitude.
