Debate on 44 Hour Work Week for Interstate Industry
A tentative thesis proposes no interstate industry should exceed 44 hours weekly without overtime pay, then step to 42 hours in year two and 40 hours from year three onward. Exceptions to 42 and 40 hours may exist, but not to 44. Questions arise about collective bargaining contracts paying workers 40 cents an hour but mandating up to 48 hours weekly. Most committee members oppose disturbing such contracts.
