Draft reclassification to move married men into top classes

Washington June 7 general revision of selective service clarifications began under Provost Marshal General Crowder. States ordered investigations into why few registrants are in class one in some areas and to transfer thousands from class four to higher classes. Married men with wives earning incomes may be reclassified. local boards to hold a special class one week in June for doubtful cases. Navy enlistments for 1918 registrants barred until orders and serial numbers are assigned.

Service Cross for Yankees

The distinguished service cross is awarded to American expeditionary forces officers and men including Lieutenants George Redwood Christian S Holmes Captain C Raymond Hulgart Lieutenant Paul Mollond Second Lieutenant Donald Moorane and noncommissoned personnel Corporal Mongeay Privates Armstrong Rolt Shuman Sergeant James A Murphy for actions on November 20 southwest of Cambrai. Redwood and four others entered an enemy trench, repelled a German force, and returned with four prisoners. Holmes led a patrol, captured a sentinel, and returned through No Man's Land. Murphy hid and killed a fired-on sentinel.

Washington, June 7. House Ways and Means opens hearings on a bill to double existing taxes to raise about 8 billion dollars for next year's war costs. April receipts show total war tax collection around 169 million, with daily government spending near 50 million.
