Egg Handlers Consolidate Routes Cut Costs
AMES reports consolidation of egg routes aims to reduce processing and handling costs. Poultry marketing specialist Leonard Eggleton of Iowa State says USDA data show route costs at about 2 cents per dozen, with some haulers cutting to 1 cent by merging routes. A mid sized plant handling 2000 cases weekly could save over 30000 yearly. operators should focus on near area pickups and encourage larger provincial flocks with differential payments by lot size to boost local egg production.

Feeding Feeders For Pasture Could Cut Cattle Costs
Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell says pasture feeding this summer may lower cattle costs by finishing cattle later. Prices for stockers and feeders have fallen about 2 dollars in late spring, with feeder prices 32 to 40 dollars lower than a year earlier. Futrell notes abundant feeder supply and beef output dampening demand, but lower feeder prices could improve feeding profits while good consumer demand supports beff promotions and imports.
