Hartzell Put in Mental Hospital
An inquiry by Sheriff C. F. Keeling shows federal officials placed Oscar M. Hartzell, Drake estate promoter, in a Springfield Missouri hospital for defective delinquents to determine the cause of his mental makeup. Hartzell, convicted in 1933 for swindling thousands through the Drake estate scheme, was sentenced to 10 years in Leavenworth federal prison. Federal officials sought verification of Hartzell’s claim he was elected Polk County sheriff in 1910 but was prevented by political skullduggery.
