Streetcar Strike Ties Rhode Island Lines This Week

Des Moines June 5 The Iowa Democratic State Central Committee meets to set the state convention date and choose temporary officers. A key issue is the temporary chairman with silver influence seen as likely to keep control, possibly extending an olive branch to gold Democrats or not. The guess is J A Brewster Ottumwa a radical silver man will be chosen and the convention may be held in Des Moines in early August.

Taft Commission Receives Pope in Rome Audience

The Taft commission was received by the pope in a cordial audience in Rome. Taft presented the Roosevelt letter and a case of books, congratulating the pontiff on his jubilee and hoping for benefit to the church and the Philippines.
